Rooted: A Sample from The Inner Apothecary

Rooted: Return to this ritual when your foundation needs tending, with botanical roots framed by dried herbs and flowers

A free sample adapted from the Rooted chapter of The Inner Apothecary, our ritual journal for body and spirit.

Return to this ritual when your foundation needs tending: when your mind is racing, when you feel scattered, or when you need a moment to return to yourself.

Begin with cleansing

Wash your hands with a favorite soap. In the journal, we use copal-infused soap as part of this grounding ritual. Let the water run over your hands. Slow your breath. Notice the feeling of the water and the simple act of caring for yourself.

Create your space

Light a red candle or warm a grounding wax melt. Let the scent settle the room before you begin. If you enjoy perfume balm, anoint your wrist with a favorite scent.

Prepare your meal

As your thoughts wander, bring them back to what you are touching. Notice the weight of the mushrooms in your hands. Notice the scent rising from the pot.

Grounding Mushroom & Dill Soup

Earthy. Restorative. Calming. A comforting recipe to prepare slowly and enjoy warm.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 16 ounces mushrooms, chopped
  • ½ bunch fresh dill, chopped
  • 2 cups water, divided
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ bunch fresh parsley, chopped
  • ¼ cup nutritional yeast

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tablespoons butter. Sauté the onion until translucent.
  2. Add the mushrooms, dill, 1½ cups water, soy sauce, and paprika. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. In a separate pot, heat the remaining olive oil and butter. Whisk in the cornstarch, then slowly whisk in the milk. Cook over medium-low heat for 5–10 minutes, or until thick.
  4. Combine the mixtures and add the remaining ½ cup water. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Stir in the salt, pepper, lemon juice, sour cream, parsley, and nutritional yeast. Serve warm.

Lou’s vegan variation: Use vegan butter, Tofutti sour cream, and soy milk.

The ritual

Eat seated. Set your phone aside. Let the warmth of the meal become a moment to pause. Give yourself time to notice the flavors, the scent, and the space around you.

The mantra

I am safe in my body.
I trust my foundation.
I am rooted within myself.

A moment for reflection

What came up for me during this ritual?
Where do I feel this in my body?
What needs tending right now?
What is one action I will take?
